Coffee Filters Don't Hold Water

I noticed that various companies included "cone" coffee filters in their survival kits for pre-filtering water. What they don't tell you is that a "cone" coffee filter will not hold water unless it is supported. The seams are only pressed together in a corrugated fashion, and those grooves and ridges will only hold together if it is supported. That is why they work in a coffee pot, as they are supported by the filter holder.

Denise and I experimented with a multitude of cone coffee filters with the corrugated seams and none of them would hold water without being supported. Here are some pictures which show that as soon as you add water, the corrugated seam fails and all the water runs out, including any debris, right into your container.

As you can see, a cone coffee filter, without support, just doesn't hold water. This is another reason why you should conduct what we call "Backyard Survival." If you are going to carry something in your survival kit, then play with it and test it in your backyard. If it fails there, you can always go in the house. If it fails in a survival situation, your further in trouble!
